Dear Harvard Vanguard,

Stop weighing me!!! Seriously! I have several appointments each month and I think one weigh in per month is enough for someone in my situation. I know there is a graph in my electronic medical record that is tracking all of this and I don’t like it. Who would?  I need a cupcake…

Love, me

Side note…

I am completely shocked that Kim Kardashian and Reggie Bush broke up. Seriously – shocked.

A special thanks to Little Rhody, Polyester and Easterly for their awesomeness. And where can I get a bean bra?

How are you feeling?

This is a question I get a lot especially at the wedding on Saturday. And most of the time, I am fine. Really fine. But then there are times when I am not. And I figure the 20% of the time I am not fine is hard to talk about.

It is just hard because I don’t feel any different from when I didn’t have cancer. And I know that a lot of changes and recovery are in store, but again I feel fine now. And the more time that goes by without a doctor’s appointment the more “normal” I feel. But then I am sure after August 24 that will all change. But for now I am happy with being fine 80% of the time.

Owned

So we have our dog.  Eli.  We named him Eli because, like Elisha Nelson Manning, he likes blue, the number 10, is from the South, and gives an “awww shucks” look when he does something wrong.

Seriously, it is Day 2 of owning Eli, a German Shepherd/Beagle mix we adopted through Great Dog Rescue of New England and we are completely owned by this dog.  We talked about letting him on the couch before he arrived and we decided no.  (Brendan said yes because our couches are older.  I said no because what happens when we get new couches.)  He tried to get onthe couch and I said no.  He tried later and looked so cute doing it I said yes.  So he is now asleep on the couch.  Eli is kind enough to let me sit on the couch as well.

Eli needs attention and not just petting but he needs to physically be on you, even if it is just sitting on your feet.  So when Brendan takes a nap, this happens.

And then this.

He has no interest in food or water which is somewhat concerning. Yesterday in a state of panic, I got down on all fours and went over to the food and water bowl and pretended to eat. Finally, Eli had some water and food. I tried this morning and he drank water. Brendan just pointed and that seemed to work as well. But then, Eli has a special relationship with Brendan. Anywhere Brendan is, Eli is. It is quite cute but soon Brendan is going to trip over him, I just know it.

We didn’t know what to do with him last night so we moved the crate (he is fine in the crate) upstairs but both Brendan and I kept waking up to make sure the dog was okay. Needless to say we need a nap. I think we will be keeping the crate downstairs and just getting a dog bed.

We also have guests in town and Eli has glomed onto them and they are continuing in the spoiling of this dog. We wanted to get Eli outside in the back to see if he would go to the bathroom but Eli was having fun hanging out with Laura and Randy. So being the good sports that they are, Laura and Randy went outside so that Eli had to come out since that is where all his peeps were. He didn’t go the bathroom.

We are going to John’s wedding today and have a friend coming over to watch him. She is originally from Germany so they will get along well. She will take him to another friend’s house for a play date. I figure this will tire him out. I am going to miss him while we are gone. Ugh.

But who wouldn’t miss this guy, he is just too cute.

More appointments…

Posted in health on July 24th, 2009 by Elizabeth – 4 Comments

Just one day after I blogged about appointments and my aunt made a comment about appointments having appointments, I get more appointments.

I also had my oncology appointment changed. I was originally slated to see Dr. Tabesh on September 4 to discuss the pathology reports and decide on a course of treatment. However, she said we should move it out because I will most likely not be up to sitting up a prolonged period of time, getting in and out of a car. Since the treatment start time wouldn’t be affected, she recommend we wait a few more days so I am more comfortable. So it just delays us knowing what the next steps are, what the specifics about the cancer (i.e., what stage it is) and what it all means.

Thursday Night Fun!

A video of one of my favorite song from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. This show makes me want to move to Philly. But then I visit there and I get over that feeling.

Interesting search terms

So the blog software tracks search terms that brought people to our site. And the results can be interesting.

There are the boring ones such as:
brendan and elizabeth
elizabeth and brendan

The so-so ones like:
Dr. Julius Irving
rescue dog home inspection

Then the scratch your head ones:
teamwork cons [obviously not a fan of teamwork]
peed pants 2009 blog -mom -baby -pregnancy [are alot of pregnant women or babies writing about peeing in their pants?]
peed my pants on vacation [poor person...]

More appointments

I really didn’t expect to have so many appointments. Seriously, I just get reminder phone calls for appointments I didn’t know I had. However, with the confirmation of the surgery date we got a “packet.”

Said packet had a list of all the necessary appointments that I have been made in anticipation of the surgery (pre-op, anesthesia consult, etc.) and afterward (surgical post-op, oncology follow up, etc.). Also in the packet was all the hospital information and the dos and don’ts. I am kind of in information overload.

And the worst part is that I think there are more appointments to be made. I just don’t know what they are. But they are out there. I know it.

Welcome to the latest member of the family!

Posted in dog on July 20th, 2009 by Elizabeth – 7 Comments

So it looks like we have a new member of the family!  While we don’t have him yet, he is en route to us from Tennessee and then will be quarantined for 48 hours in Harvard, Mass and then he is ours.

We had to fill out an application, have a phone interview then go through a reference check.  Because we do not have a vet reference, my volunteer coordinator was going to call our personal references. Our personal references included Alett and Keith – so we worried because of Keith.  Next up was a home visit which is stressful because what are they looking for healthy food in the fridge?  a big backyard?   A huge living space?  Turns out they couldn’t get a volunteer to come over so we ended up just sending pictures.

Below are the pictures provided by the rescue organization.  We will have a ton of pictures to follow.
