Wintery Mix

Posted in Boston-area, dog on October 16th, 2009 by Elizabeth – 3 Comments

We woke up to some snow flurries this morning, along with slushy rain.

Eli had to be coaxed outside in order to take care of business.  He then ran inside and his teeth were chattering.  I swear they were.  He obviously takes after Brendan.  They are very delicate flowers.

I on the other hand donated my winter coat over the summer and forgot to get a new one.  I finally ordered one and it arrived yesterday but it is not a good fit and I don’t think it is warm enough.  So I am wearing this zip up sweatshirt.

Apple Pickin’

Posted in Boston-area, dog on October 10th, 2009 by Elizabeth – 3 Comments

Today we went to Nashoba Valley Winery and Orchard for some good ol’ apple picking. We picked this spot because they allow dogs. So we packed up the pup and headed about an hour outside the city. (This was a good test to see if Eli can handle the drive to NY. After an hour he was fine so it looks good with some stopping.) Also Eli was really well behaved while walking around, meeting new people (especially the kids, though one attacked him with hugs and kisses while her sister started crying because she wanted to hold the leash), and interacting with other dogs.

View from the Orchard.

And this place started out as a winery and have a large wine store. Brendan was sent in while I stayed outside with Eli. We thought maybe a red and white. This is him coming out of the store. You shouldn’t be carrying a box for 2 bottles of wine.

And this is Eli about 5 minutes after we left the orchard.  He was one tired, but happy, pup.

Let’s see if I am motivated to make the pie tomorrow.

Really out and about

So these last couple of days I have been venturing out of the comfort of the apartment.

Saturday I went for a ride to the vet with B and Eli (who is now good in the car compared to when we first got him).

Sunday B and I went to John’s and Caroline’s to watch the Giants game (Go Big Blue!) and while I was still in my pajamas and riding in the back of the car, it was a nice outing.

Today I met Larry and one half of the 2-H club for lunch at my favorite place: Eat at Jumbo’s.

This is all good since I will probably be returning to work soon.

Overall review of the Brigham and Women’s

Posted in Boston-area, health on September 5th, 2009 by Elizabeth – Comments Off

According to US News and World Report, the Brigham is 10th in country as an overall hospital (it was 25th for treating breast cancer) and we couldn’t agree more.  Both Brendan and I were mightily impressed with the hospital.

Visitor Waiting Area: The waiting area was incredible.  Brendan had a pager/light thing (the thing you get when you are at a restaurant to let you know when your table is ready) that would alert him when a doctor called or there was new information.  They also took his name and phone number down and my actual surgeons called his cell phone to discuss what was finished and any information that could be provided.  Brendan’s fear was that he would be walking around not knowing what was going on but that was not the case.  In fact, when he went to the desk at one point to inquire abou the surgery he was told “The first incision was made at 11:02.”  The area also has free snacks, coffee, wifi, papers, and TV.

Surgeons: I have talked about my surgeons in previous posts but I cannot stress enough how much I love them.  Dr. Guo and Dr. Carter were great the morning of the surgery and during my entire stay.  Dr. Carter went out of her way to check in on me every day even on the days she was seeing patients at her Quincy office.   Both explained everything in great detail and never minded answering our questions.  More importantly, we never felt like we couldn’t ask anything of them. And as far as we know – they both did terrific work.

Nurses: I loved all of my nurses.  It was great to get to a regular room because we got to have some repeats in terms of nurses.  These people had great bedside manners and were very patient with me when I needed help getting in and out of bed.  They also were great in terms of deciding what to eat.  Those first few days I was hesitant to eat anything but they had great suggestions and made sure that I ordered my meals.  They also took great care when administering the dreaded heparin shot and I think felt bad.  The last few times the nurse knew to wake Brendan up if the shot was coming.  What I also liked is that they weren’t afraid to joke around with us because as most of you know, Brendan and I can be somewhat sarcastic at times.

Food: I had an expectation of the Brigham’s food from Larry.  He said he and his wife looked forward to the room service when they delivered their children.  So I was expecting some good stuff.  And it was good.  And you could order anything on the menu at any time of the day.  It was like a diner.  I didn’t venture into steak tips land but I loved that I could eat on my schedule and have a wide variety of options.

Accommodations: The ICU room was okay and I barely remember it.  But I do remember that the ICU is noisy.  Everyone talks at all hours of the day in the ICU.  My regular room was much quieter and was like a hotel.  And I am not joking.  We had room for a pull out chair for Brendan, a flat screen tv, mini fridge, bathroom and right outside the room was a kitchen area for our use.  The hallways were a nice carpet for when I walked around the floor.

Overall, if you need surgery – I recommend the Brigham.

Hockey East at Fenway

We got tickets!! I am so excited. What is Hockey East at Fenway you ask? Well one week after the 2010 Hockey Classic, BC will play BU in a men’s hockey match.  Outside.  At Fenway.  How cool is that?  It will be interesting to see how the rink fits in the stadium, what the sight lines are like, what the weather is like and how these kids handle the elements.

I still want to go to the Winter Classic at Fenway but it is not a necessity since I am going to the BC/BU game. It is going to be awesome.

Taboo dinner conversation

When dining in a public place, you should not carry on (loudly) about STDs and specifically, STDs at nursing homes.

Just saying.

PS: Sibling Rivalry is a very nice restaurant

Near Attack on Boylston

Posted in Boston-area on August 10th, 2009 by Elizabeth – 6 Comments

Sunday was a day of near attacks on me by other species. After surviving the Rumble on Bristol Road, I went downtown to spend the day with the Koumpara. I never realized the wildlife that was circling Boylston Street. We are walking up the street towards Tremont, heading to the AMC movie theater to see (500) days of Summer. And while doing so, we saw this kid in front of us duck and his family make noise and then we saw it. It being this albatross-like-bird that could have easily picked the kid or Koumpara up and taken them to some far away land. Seriously, this bird was huge and low flying. I push Gina and basically use her as a human shield, all while screaming at the top of my lungs. Then once I knew I was safe, I started laughing uncontrollable. As we walked away, other people were talking about this thing so we know we weren’t exaggerating its size.

Rumble on Bristol Road

On Sunday, Brendan and I took Eli out for a nice long walk around Davis/Ball Square. And it was going swimmingly. The dog was behaving, I had an iced coffee, the sun was out and then we turned up our street.

We passed a house that has some shrubery out front and it seemed innocuous. Seriously. And then this cat jumped out of no where and was ready to attack. Back was arched, tail up, all the hairs standing on end. Needless to say, I screamed and Eli started barking. Brendan pulled at Eli and we tried to walk up the street but the cat would not back down. Bizarrely the cat advanced as we walked away. We tried to shoo it away but to no avail. All the time, Eli is still barking like a mad man. Brendan finally picked up the dog and started to walk home while I kept an out that the cat was not following. It was crazy and last night I ran by the house for fear of another attack on us. Life is tough in Meffa – real tough.   Be careful.

Shout out: Happy Birthday Teresa and enjoy your birthday gift!

Greek Easter

Posted in Boston-area, Holidays on June 3rd, 2009 by Elizabeth – Comments Off

Later in April, Brendan’s cousin came up to visit from Georgia.  Turns out she was attending a weekend workshop right in our hometown of Medford.

Some interesting facts about Medford.

  • You can walk down the same street Paul Revere rode down on his horse – shouting the British are coming, the British are coming
  • You can visit Tufts University
  • Jingle Bells was written here
  • [For my NYC peeps] Michael Bloomberg lived here and went to Medford High School
  • You can go to Modern Bakery (better than Mike’s Pastries) without having to go to the North End
  • Medford Square is Ground Zero for the gypsy moth infestation of North America
  • Fannie Farmer was born here

That same weekend, my friend who I affectionately call Koumpara hosted Greek Easter at her apartment and it was FABULOUS!  I wanted to be Greek after that dinner.  But I have to settle for being a philhellene.  Some pictures of Gina (Koumpara) being Gina, Will, and Winson (aka the Seafood Prince of NY).
