“There will always be clapping” – BFD

I was out with BFD (Best Friend Debbie) who was in town for MATH CAMP. Seriously, she was at a math camp for teachers.  We had fun catching up and talking about things and clapping.

We were out at the Burren (just drinking since B got food poisoning from there) and we heard the best team name “Jon Minus Nine”. Very clever.

I realized that I may be an 8 or 9 year old at heart as she gave me a math problem and I could barely hold a conversation while doing it.  So as a rare treat I will present themath problem that BFD was given in class. Please note that BFD got them all correct. I had some hints.

Using only the following operators: +, -, (), √, ÷, x

2  2  2  =  6

3  3  3  = 6

4  4  4  =  6

5  5  5  = 6

6  6  6  = 6

7  7  7  = 6

8  8  8   = 6

9  9  9  = 6

If anyone else has word or math problems that can distract me -  send them my way.  Not too difficult seeing as the 8s in this problem gave me trouble.

  1. Teresa says:

Is that a square root symbol? More humiliation to follow.

  2. Elizabeth says:

Yes that is a square root symbol

  3. Brendan says:

I was not there for the full answer so I did not cheat. So as to not ruin the fun for others I won’t post the answers here but you can go look at them:

  4. Kim says:

grrr I’m stuck on the 8′s too!!

  5. Marilyn says:

Hi!!! Toffee’s mom (Alett!) sent us over here to give you some support/positive thoughts in the light of your recent diagnosis…

On that note…I am the worst Math person ever so don’t even expect a comment on those impossibly difficult problems listed!!!!!!!!

Seriously, we just read through your blog…I have a friend her in my neighborhood who had to make the same tough decisions you’re making now…she opted for a double mast. which was done in October of ’07…I think her main source of strength was her crazy sense of humor…she too caught it very early and has done great since.

We’ll be thinking of you and sending you postive thoughts and prayers!!!

and Scruffy, Lacie and Stanley….it’s their blog!!!!!

  6. Papa Dan says:

There is more than one solution to some unless I misinterpreted the rules:

    EX: (9+9) / Sq rt 9

    Sq rt 9 * Sq rt 9 – Sq rt 9

  7. Elizabeth says:

Yes there are multiple ways for some but for the 8′s there is only one solution.

  8. Papa Dan says:

    I have 2 ways for the 8′s

  9. Elizabeth says:

What are they? According to the math camp counselor there is only one?
